InterviewsUSAInterview to the attorney Giancarlo Pelosi

Newspaper: Flip Magazine

The doors of the Italian headquarters of the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce Southeast Inc. are opened to us by the attorney Giancarlo Pelosi who awaits us for our interview in his office in the heart of Milan, with a large window from where you can admire the Duomo. Very elegant and sly, he welcomes us with polite ways and making us feel at ease. With the inevitable Tuscan cigar and with his elegant manners, our chat can begin, only after putting on the mobile phone, always ready to ring, in meeting mode.

– Mr. Pelosi, let’s start our interview talking about him, tell us more about your professional experiences, also accompanied by a more personal profile.

“After graduating in Law, becoming an attorney, I decide to specialize in international law, moving to New York for 3 years. I started my business at the prestigious Nixon Law Firm, Lawyer, Politician and later President of the United States. This experience has allowed me to acquire a very high profile professionalism and knowledge of the sector. Also allowing me to have a more markedly Anglo-Saxon mentality, both professionally and personally. At the end of these 3 very, intense years, I decide to come back to Messina to my law firm, where I remain until 1985, when I move again, to undertake my professional activity in the economic capital of our country, Milan.  Life changes  have never scared me. I grew up in a family where travel was almost the order of the day. In fact, I am the son of Admiral Pelosi: War Hero, Gold Medal for Military Valor, President of the Superior Council of the Armed Forces. Once he finished his active service in the Italian Navy, he held various roles, including that of Vice President of Fincantieri. When I  was three years old I lived in Somalia, where my father at that time was Commander of the Navy in Mogadishu. A childhood and youth up to 25 years of age, formative but, at the same time, debilitating. This allowed me to know different cultures from the early years of my existence and, thus opening my mindset from a young age. In Milan, in addition to the profession of lawyer, I also diversify my business interests. In fact, with Prof. Mauro Pecchenino I start a professional collaboration, a twenty-year partnership, with the opening of the communication agency SGP. Several clients, often of great prestige and various professional satisfactions. At the beginning of 2000, several lawyers of my correspondents from the USA communicate to me the decision to leave New York to move to Miami. I too decide to focus on Miami, following the globetrotter soul that has always distinguished me. ”

Today Giancarlo Pelosi is among the few who can practice as attorney in Miami, having the qualification of F.L.C (Foreign Legal Consultant). In the USA, in order to be able to practice as an attorney you must be in possession of professional requirements that are certified and evaluated by a special central Commission located in Illinois which decides, after having thoroughly evaluated the Curriculum, the suitability of the person to be able to exercise the role of lawyer in the United States. Once the Central Commission gives its consent, the documents are sent to the Supreme Court of the United States which, in turn, sends them to the US Supreme Court of the section of the state, where one begins to practice as a lawyer. In 2001, Pelosi, once certified with all the honors and privileges that the Florida Supreme Court grants him, can start his FLC activity. Today, together with another French colleague, they are the only European attorneys who can practice in Florida.

– Attorney Pelosi, in your opinion, why should an Italian company aim to land in Florida, what role does the South East Chamber of Commerce play and, specifically, the Italian Representative Office in Milan that you coordinate?

“Because Miami is not just Florida, the United States of America. Miami is above all the aircraft carrier for South America, the ideal outlet to the countries of Latin America. The great entrepreneurs of Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, etc. are located in Miami, the only American metropolis, magnet of the true melting pot, also entrepreneurial. Then, today,  only in Florida there is a community of about twenty thousand Italians (including those of the first or second generation). Being a Foreign Legal Consultant, I have a dual role: Italian lawyer who can practice in Florida and therefore offer legal advice, for example to:

– American companies that want to invest in Italy;

– Italian companies that want to invest

In addition, we offer all legal consultancy and much more, which can help anyone who wants to undertake in Florida in a concrete and immediate way. I conclude by pointing out how Miami in the last years has recorded extraordinary performances in terms of economic development despite the negative trend of other realities.

Miami and Florida are waiting for you to take new paths of success.
